Give One It's Due

“Individuals have a right not to be misrepresented and the public has a right not to be misled.” – Peter Bradley

As human beings, we have the right to express what we feel. In such case, the Right of Reply Bill was proposed.

Section 1 of the proposed law states:

“All persons natural or juridical who are accused directly or indirectly of committing or having committed or of intending to commit any crime or offense defined by law or are criticized by innuendo, suggestion or rumor for any lapse in behavior in public or private life shall have the right to reply to the charges published or printed in newspapers, magazines, newsletters or publications circulated commercially or for free, or to criticisms aired or broadcast over radio, television, websites, or through any electronic device.”

The Right of Reply Bill is simply the right to defend oneself against criticism. If this will be a law, broadcasters, journalists and bloggers who publish an article that would offend someone, are required to air the rebuttal of subject of their criticism. The Right of Reply Bill therefore suggests equality among the people.

KBP President Herman Z. BasbaƱo said in an interview, the media couldn’t function freely and fully report on public matters if this bill was enacted into a law.

Does Right of Reply Bill violate the freedom of the Press?

According to Senator Aquilino Pimentel, the Bill DOES NOT curtail the freedom of the press. The press can still air whatever they want.

Sen. Pimentel also added that even if the right to reply becomes a law, the press would continue to have the right to offend and there is no prior censorship that is being imposed by the right to reply bill.

Yes, the offended person can write a letter or be interviewed to deny or answer the article in question, but in the end of the day, the editor or whoever’s in-charge still decides whether to air or broadcast the reply. The right to reply shall be the means on answering and clarifying the points on a publication or broadcast and not to take away the press freedom.

If this bill will be enacted, there will be a lot of advantages and changes for the better.

Not only that it is less expensive than in filing a libel case against the offender, it is easier for both parties to resolve certain issues.

The press has the freedom to offend and to air whatever they want. It is fair enough that they should give others the chance to protect themselves from inaccurate articles that malign them, intentionally or not.

Let the passing of this bill be the start of boosting responsible journalism in the country.

“The essence of democracy is its assurance that every human being should so respect himself and should be so respected in his own personality that he should have opportunity equal to that of every other human being to show what he was meant to become.” – Anna Garlin Spencer.

My face or friend?

I once asked myself, “Which would I choose over everything, my face or my friend?” I can’t decide what to spare, my user-friendly friend or my face that could bring too much entertainment?

Don’t even laugh at my “Face”, I have a level 38 “Pet-Soc”, and don’t criticize my “Friend”, I have 1108 friends!

(Huh? Anong friend and face?) It’s facebook and friendster!

These two are probably the toppers in the list of the most popular Social Networking sites. However, their ranks sometimes interchange, not one is always the 1st or the 2nd.

Friendster, on the first place, garnered almost all of the attentions of the net-maniacs and surfers around the globe. But now, here comes Facebook, knocking at the door and saying “hi and buh-bye” to friendster. It is hard to compare these two because there are many factors that determine the dominance of one to another:

Features

When it comes to features, Hi-5 to facebook. Its multiple-application ranging from interactive quizzes, games, and chat boxes says it all, compared to friendster’s slow-to-function apps.

One feature of friendster that made lose in this factor is its inaccurate time for notifications of messages, comments, and the likes. Try facebook if you crave for more time accuracy and not-so-bad features.

User-friendliness

All thumbs up for friendster for its user-friendliness. Its icons and buttons are easy to find and read that even the children, as young as 5 years old, can use it. Unlike FS, Facebook consists of interactive buttons that a first-timer would mess with because these buttons are seemingly placed at random and messy places.

User-personality presentation

One point, again, was given to friendster. Remember formulating and designing your own pages with backgrounds, BGM’s and photos? That was a big slap to facebook’s plain white and blue interface in viewing a person’s profile or page. Friendster gives favor to the crafty clicking hands of amateur web designers for its allowance of customization.

Faster page loading

Facebook ties the game with its faster page loading. Unlike FS, Facebook loads only the section that is clicked instead of loading whole page, making it faster to use.

Striking name

According to webupon.com, Friendster is a unique brand name. Hearing the word somewhat rings the bell, that one pronunciation of it already tells that it has something to do with friends, unlike the names, Facebook, Multiply and Myspace which are seemingly self-centered.

These things might help you to decide whether you would stick to facebook or friendster. Or you might use both. But always remember that, it doesn’t matter what social networking site you are signed in, as long as you know how to use it wisely. You must be in charge of these sites and don’t ever let them control you that you become so addicted.

So now, what are you going to choose? Your face or your friend?

Election 2010: Who's your bet?

Everyday we hear and see those campaign jingles, commercials, and advertisement. Truly, the scent of the upcoming 2010 Presidential Election is filling the air. In two months time, we will be choosing our next president. I do believe in the power of voting, because it can change the way our government is moving right now. That is why the candidates for president are doing their very best, putting their best foot forward, using the wealth that they have just to please the voters. They are spending their money and time, hiring a public relation practitioner only for them to have a good image.

Studying public information and public relation makes me more sensitive whether the public figure is sincere on what he or she is saying on the ads. Let me share to you what I think about the following presidential candidates and what I think about their public relation strategy.

Starting off with, Sen. Noynoy Aquino. He and his campaign managers understand what aspects of him that will surely be a hit to the public: and that is the legacy of his surname, his parents and the people power revolution. Those features are much loved by the people, that is why I can say that Noynoy and his PR persons has a wise strategy in the sense of using these aspects in the operation. His campaign managers used a very good approach in packaging and building a good image for him, despite of the rumors about the Land Reform.

Almost the same strategy is being used by Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro. Like what his famous quote says, he is indeed a combination of “Galing at Talino”. He is a lawyer and a pilot. The public can see in the way he answer the questions presented to him that he is intelligent. His group targets the youth that is appropriate to his quote “Wit and Intelligence”. But those people in the middle to the lower class might not find Gibo’s advocacy interesting. That’s where Villar’s style comes in. Villar has a very good PR person but I think they are acting too desperate to win. He has so many ads, that even noontime shows like Eat Bulaga and Wowowee advertise him. It’s amazing that it seems he can manipulate survey results. His main style is getting the trust of poor Filipinos.

Their style can either be appealing to us or not. They all promise change and non-corruption in the government. It is now down to us to decide who to vote. After all, it is God’s will that should be done. Whoever gets the positions, we, as citizens of the country, should accept and cooperate if really want a change in the country. Vote wisely, vote whoever you want then leave it all to the hands of God, who can really give us the change that we are looking for.

A Day with the Paramount

Share to others what I know: that’s what I kept in mind during our workshop with the 3rd year high school students of Angeles City Science High School.

Our class was scheduled to conduct a workshop about copy editing, last January 25. As part of the preparation for the activity, our project head designated us to different work teams. We wasted no time to prepare for this event. Workshop facilitators and the technical team have prepared activities in line with the topic. I was tasked to be one of the speakers for section III-Avogadro.

My classmates were a bit scared to speak before the students of ACSci because they have the notion that the students there are intelligent plus the fact that they won 3rd place on copy editing on DSPC. Even I, was nervous to speak in front of them and teach them the copy editing symbols, because they might know it better than me. But we have to do this workshop, that’s why we’ve gathered all our energies, efforts and knowledge for the success of this activity.

Section III-Avogadro, as the first section of the junior high school of ACSci, I expected them to be the serious type of students that you can’t even throw jokes on them and all they want is to read and study their notes. But my three hours of stay in their classroom during the workshop is fun. They are very participative and attentive to what we are saying. Sharing them what I know about copy editing is like reviewing myself from what our professor have discussed to us.

It’s good to have this kind of experience. Truly, this kind of activity is worth to be written in the diary of my college life. What we did as a class made me think that we are contributing to the future. Who knows that one or two of those we taught about copy editing will be one the greatest editors in the country. And thanks to this workshop because I’ve got the chance to visit the school who trained me to be the person I am right now, after three years.

Overall, I have learned a lot about the workshop that we’ve conducted. And once again, our class proved how united we are and how much we are determined to achieve what we want. Kudos to my fellow AB Communication 3B students. Hope to have more projects with you.

Spell TEACHER

Note: This article is intended to air the
sentiments of a student like me
who wants to be heard.

Teacher, Professor, Madame, Sir… These are some names that we often label them. Kind, considerate, diligent, intelligent, industrious, “masungit”, and terror; every teacher has their own unique characteristic and teaching routine. However, I have experienced a different kind of professor during my three years in college. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Professor X… (Not the one who leads the X-men… laughs).
A teacher is the one who instructs, prepares and leads his or her students on the path that they wanted to achieve. How would they do that, if they don’t teach anything? From the start of the semester up to this point, I haven’t learned a thing. If I would be asked who taught me of what I knew about the subject that Professor X is teaching, I would say that our class has been doing nothing but to teach ourselves about what we should know. Lately, we have been instructed to do our own documentary film. At first, I was excited to do that. Not knowing that Professor X will not instruct us what to do, we obeyed him. Of course, obeying his or her teacher is a responsibility of a student. What I was trying to point out is that we, students, will have a better output of our documentary, if only he taught us what we should do. And now, we are stressed and pressured to finish this documentary without being supported by our own professor.
They say that a teacher is the second mother or father of a student. If they are so, why can’t we find them when we need them? They are not even attending classes. Imagine, I am trying to get up early just to attend his classes only to find out that he is not around. When I wanted to ask something about our project, he is nowhere to find.
I had this professor who held our journalism subject. Our class learned, maybe a few, but we still need to learn more. He may be teaching us but it is not enough that we sit and listen to him as he read to us his outlines. Good thing that he taught us the Code and Ethics of a Journalist, at least I could write an article but still, I need more.
A saying goes: “Be proud, you are a teacher, you mold the future…” What would happen in the future, if our teachers are not that competent? I am an AB Communication student, and it is not easy for someone like me to look for a job. It is not easy for us to go with the flow of other Universities in Manila who offers the same course. We need to be a competent student and that is only possible if the one who teaches is also competent. The curriculum is good, but we need someone who will make us feel that it is worth our lifetime. I remember my dad who told me to shift to another course or transfer to other university because of what is happening in our subjects. I hope the university will not wait for students to transfer to another school because of this reasons.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” I hope that in my remaining year in college, I would be proud to say that I am a graduate of this course in this university. Again, this is not intended to degrade the dignity of professors; this is intended to air the sentiments of a student like me who wants to have a better and quality education.
